Plan a Visit to the Memorial

The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial, which sits at the foot of the City Dock in Annapolis, Maryland, is located at a site currently visited by nearly a million people a year. It is the only monument of its kind in the United States that commemorates the actual name and place of arrival of an enslaved African. Annapolis is known for it's historic and charming quaint landmarks, its brick paved streets, its national boat shows, and its home for the United States Naval Academy.

It is a town rich in American history. A notable landmark in Annapolis is the State House (1772-1780), the oldest State Capitol still in continuous legislative use. It was here that the Continental Congress met; General George Washington resigned from the Continental Army in 1783; the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution was ratified in 1784: and the Annapolis Convention of 1786 took place. Also of interest are the Old Treasury (1735), the oldest public building still standing in Maryland, the Charles Carroll mansion, home of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and Saint Anne's Church (1858-1859), built on the site of an Anglican church of the 1690s. The United States Naval Academy (1845), the burial site of John Paul Jones, and St. John's College (1784) are also located in Annapolis.
