Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial Receives VIP Treatment

VIP Treatment Gives New Life to the Sculptures
(shown above are three of the four sculptures)

The four sculptures which represent a key element of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial are looking a lot better these days thanks to a maintenance treatment completed in the first week of May. “With a new wax and buff treatment, the Memorial is ready to greet visitors who venture to Annapolis from all parts of the globe,” says Gary Schwerzler, interpretive architect of the Memorial and an original founding Board member of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation.

“The average person doesn’t realize how much wear and tear occurs during the daily life of sculptures, especially ones as popular.and people-friendly as the ones which comprise a key element of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial.”

The Memorial’s sculptures are located in an area of high traffic, both pedestrian and automobile. Certain areas of the sculptures suffer a great deal of physical contact from passersby, such as rubbing, sitting, climbing, and countless visitor photo shoots. Without a regular ongoing treatment program and proper maintenance, the longevity and beauty of these original pieces of art are greatly diminished. With an estimated one million people per year visiting the Memorial, its care remains a priority for the Foundation.

In December 2009 the sculptures will celebrate their ten-year anniversary. Within the next year or two a more thorough treatment will be required. “Without the ongoing financial support of individuals and organizations, we would not be able to keep the Memorial in good shape. As a valuable piece of art, we all have the responsibility of insuring that all the elements of the Memorial are effectively protected and guarded against deterioration.” Says Schwerzler, “We want these sculptures to be around for our great-grandchildren to enjoy.”

To contribute to the care of the Memorial or other programs provided by the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation, send checks to KKAH Foundation, Sojourner Douglass College, Annapolis, MD. The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
