Record-Setting Snowfalls Bring 80 Inches of Snow (and Still Counting) In One Season

Historic Back to Back Blizzards Bury the Memorial

The four sculptures of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial are looking a lot better these days thanks to the careful shoveling techniques of the many residents and friends of their Annapolis, Maryland neighbors. Weather forecasters say more snow may be on the way before this long wet winter ends.

“The average person doesn’t realize how much wear and tear occurs during the daily life of sculptures, especially ones as popular.and people-friendly as the ones which comprise a key element of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial,” says one of the Memorial’s original creators, Gary S. Schwerzler.

The Memorial’s sculptures are located in an area of high traffic, both pedestrian and automobile. Certain areas of the sculptures suffer a great deal of physical contact from passersby, such as rubbing, sitting, climbing, and countless visitor photo shoots. “The eighty plus inches of snow have placed an even greater than usual stress on the Memorial. It is still too soon to tell the full extent of any damage which may have resulted. Meanwhile all we can do is slow down and take time to enjoy this new winter wonderland we now call Annapolis.”

To contribute to the care of the Memorial or other programs provided by the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation, send checks to KKAH, 135 Stepney’s Lane, Edgewater, MD 21037. The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
