Peace Talks: "No Better Place than the Kunta Kinte-Alex
Haley Memorial"
(Annapolis, Maryland) The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial,
seen by some one million people per year, is the Annapolis
center for reflection and healing. People from around the
world visit the Memorial to reflect on their past and to
seek courage and inspiration for a future filled with peace.
Says
Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Foundation Board Chairman Alan Hay,
" I can think of no better place than the Kunta Kinte-Alex
Haley Memorial to seek inspiration for peace and healing.
The last plaque in the Story Wall reminds us that while
diversity of people is strength, we are essentially all
one people. To symbolize that, the plaques' frame has the
word people translated in over 60 different languages."
Across
the street at the Memorial's Compass Rose, visitors stand
at the center of the 14-foot diameter compass where a bronze
globe is oriented toward true North. Here they stand at
the Annapolis center and then face the lands of their ancestors.
They all share Annapolis in common. "We like to think
of the Memorial as a starting point for reconciliation and
peace," says Hay. "Annapolis offers the ideal
setting for the Peace Talks. We extend our best wishes to
all those who will be participating in the talks."
The
Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial sits at the harbor's edge
in in the heart of Annapolis. Completed in 2002, it was
built by the people of Annapolis to celebrate each person's
unique family heritage, while sharing humankind's common,
universal experiences. The Memorial was recently ranked
as one of the ten ten visitor attractions in the region.
It is owned and maintained by the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley
Foundation. For more information, contact the Foundation
